TRAIN LIKE LIVES DEPEND ON YOU—BECAUSE THEY DO

Firefighter-specific training built on 30 years in the fire service—designed to help you perform at your best when it matters most.

Welcome To Firefighter Peak Performance

Whether you’re preparing to get hired, getting ready for the recruit academy, working through the demands of shift work, or leading from the front in administration, you carry the responsibility this profession demands.

The reality is that most fitness programs fall short for firefighters. They aren’t built for the unique physical, mental, and emotional demands of the job.

That’s why I created Firefighter Peak Performance.

With more than three decades in the fire service and firefighter performance coaching, I understand what it takes to train for the realities of the fireground—and the long haul of a career.

My mission is to equip firefighters with the training, tools, and mindset to perform at their best, reduce injury risk, and stay strong, capable, and Response Ready throughout their careers.

My relationship with fitness didn’t start in a firehouse. It started in a garage.

At 13, I was lifting old-school cement weights with my dad. No sophisticated equipment. No structured programming—just consistency. Those early workouts built more than strength. They built discipline, accountability, and the habit of showing up, whether I felt like it or not. That foundation shaped everything that followed.

In 1993, I joined the fire service as a volunteer while earning my degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Nutrition at Washington State University. Almost immediately, I recognized the connection between what I was studying and what we were asked to do on the fireground. Biomechanics, energy systems, movement efficiency, recovery, and nutrition directly impact performance, safety, and longevity in a demanding profession.

By 1995, as a resident firefighter, I was facilitating fitness testing and writing training programs for other firefighters. In 1996, I was hired full-time as a Firefighter/EMT and stepped into a Peer Fitness Trainer role during my first year on the job. Over the next three decades—ultimately retiring as an Operations Battalion Chief—I consistently integrated exercise science into firefighter performance, wellness, and resilience.

Like many firefighters, my own training approach was flawed.

In my 20s, I embraced a “go big or go home” mindset. I trained hard, pushed through pain, and relied on toughness to power through every workout.

By my mid-30s, that approach caught up with me. Chronic pain, multiple surgeries, and arthritis in my hips and low back forced me to confront a difficult reality.

Working harder was not the solution.

That experience forced a fundamental shift. I returned to the foundations—studying movement more deeply, learning from world-class mentors, and refining my programming through years of experimentation.

Instead of chasing intensity, I focused on structure: movement quality, intelligent progression, recovery, and systems that adapt to shift work and real-life stress.

Across more than 30 years in the fire service, several principles became clear:

  • Training must be intentional, not random.

  • Programs must adapt to shift work and life stress.

  • Consistency outweighs ego-driven intensity.

  • Movement quality transfers directly to performance.

  • Recovery is non-negotiable.

  • Pain ignored early often leads to injury later.

I’ve seen the same pattern repeat across the fire service—strong firefighters early in their careers gradually worn down by random workouts and accumulated stress.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Today, as the founder of Firefighter Peak Performance, my mission is to help firefighter candidates, operational firefighters, and driven professionals build strength, protect their health, and sustain high performance for the long haul.

Because it’s not just about being fit.

It’s about being ready.

Train With Purpose. Perform With Confidence. Be Response Ready.
